A R T I S T ' S S T A T E M E N T
| The "Elegant Universe" is an exploration of the relationship between nature and science and how they impact one another; specifically in the realm of reproduction: sex, pregnancy tests, in vitro fertilization, birth, and cloning. The series is inspired by my interest in genetics, my mixed feelings about my own reproductive choices, and by my Catholic upbringing. The collection is a loose, abstract narrative containing recurring subject matter. The sea sponges, for example, navigate the paintings, taking on an allegorical role. At times they function as either scientific instruments, religious articles, or even bodily appendages. The paintings are mixed media, including chalkboard, enamel, and acrylic paint, oil sticks, graphite, and wax. |
